Liquids in Hand Luggage

Most airports in the world have adopted the model implemented in the United States and the European Union regarding liquids permitted aboard in hand luggage. It is recommended to follow the regulations carefully so that you do not have to dispose of prohibited items in your luggage.

Generally, unpleasantness can be avoided if liquids are packed into your baggage stored in the hold of the aircraft.

The detailed information below applies to passengers flying to and from the following destinations: the United States, European Union countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, China, Hong Kong, Mumbai (India), Bangkok (Thailand) and Joh​annesburg (South Africa).​

Conditions for boarding EL AL flights with liquids

  • The volume of each container containing the liquid cannot exceed 100 ml (3.4 oz)
  • All items must be packed together in a reseal-able plastic bag
  • The contents of the bag cannot exceed 1 liter
  • Each passenger is entitled to carry only one such bag in the hand luggage
  • Medications and special food products (such as baby food) required for the flight do not have to be in the plastic bag but they have to be presented at the security check
  • Passengers on continuation flights can purchase duty free products only if they are left and stored in Israel
  • Passengers embarking on a continuation flight cannot purchase products prohibited on the plane even from the Duty Free on the plane
  • There are no additional limitations on products in baggage sent to the hold of the plane

Liquids on flights to/from the European Union

Duty Free Items

On flights departing from European Union countries only duty free items purchased in European Union airports can be taken aboard. These products must be in sealed packages and you must present a valid receipt from the point of purchase. Products that do not meet these requirements as well as products purchased at duty free shops outside of European Union airports will be confiscated.

Please note that only the above products should be placed in the plastic bag. All other products that passengers would like to take aboard with them can be placed in their hand luggage. The bag can be placed in the hand luggage and taken out for security check at airports in Europe.

Liquid on Flights to/from China

  • Passengers arriving from other countries and waiting for continuation flights from China can board with purchases made in the duty free shops at the airport. You must keep the receipt and present it to security personnel in order to take advantage of this option
  • It is permitted to bring medications, baby food and special dietary products aboard the plane
  • The above does not apply to domestic flights in China, where it is permitted to take up to 1 liter of liquids (alcohol should be sent in the luggage stored in the belly of the plane)

Liquid on Flights to/from Hong Kong

  • It is permitted to bring on board medications and special food products (such as baby food) required for the flight, and not in a plastic bag. However, these products must be presented at the security checks
  • It is not permitted to bring aboard the aircraft duty free items that do not meet the conditions (such as bottles of drinks)

Duty Free Items

It is permitted to take on board the plane duty free products purchased at Hong Kong airport. The products must be in a sealed package and a valid receipt from the point of purchase must be presented. Products that do not meet these requirements as well as products purchased at duty free shops outside the Hong Kong airport will be confiscated. This procedure also applies to passengers departing from Ben-Gurion Airport to Hong Kong and then taking continuation flights.

Please note that only the above products should be placed in the plastic bag. All other items that passengers would like to take with them can be placed in the hand luggage. The bag can be placed in the hand luggage and then taken out for security checks at the Hong Kong airport.

Liquid on Flights to/from Bangkok, Johannesburg

  • Approval is needed to take baby food and health products aboard the plane
  • Passengers on continuation flights can purchase duty free items only if they leave them in Israel (left and stored)
  • Passengers taking continuation flights are not allowed to purchase products that are prohibited on board, even from the inflight duty free shop. They will be confiscated by the local security authorities
  • Passengers from Ben-Gurion Airport to Bangkok and Johannesburg and passengers continuing their flights from there are allowed one piece of hand luggage each

Liquid on Flights to/from Mumbai

It is permitted to bring on board medications and special food products (such as baby food) needed for the flight, not in a plastic bag. These products should be presented at the security checks. It is not permitted to take on board duty free products that do not meet regulations (such as bottles of drinks).

Duty Free Item

Passengers on continuation flights can purchase duty free products only if they leave and store the products in Israel. Products that are prohibited on the plane cannot be purchased even from the inflight duty free shop by passengers embarking on continuation flights. There is no additional limitation on products in baggage stored in the hold of the plane.

Liquid on Flights to/from Russia

It is not permitted to bring liquids and sprays of any kind on board flights departing from the airports in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Only medications and baby food can be brought on board after approval by the authorities at the security check at the airport. In these cases it is essential to arrive at the airport early.
