Formerly it was known as “Siam,” but on May 11, 1939 it was renamed as “Thailand”. The word “Thai” means “freedom.”
Slightly above the equator, Thailand is located on the Southeast Asian mainland. It is adjacent to Myanmar on the Northern border, next to Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand on the Eastern border, adjacent to Myanmar and the Indian Ocean on the Western border, and next to Malaysia on the Southern border.
The country is divided into four parts - North, Central Plain, Northeast, and South.
Northern Part consists of 17 provinces and is 80% mountainous. Chiang Mai Province is in the center of the upper northern part, and Phitsanuloke province is in the center of the lower northern part.
Northeast Part consists of 19 provinces, and is one third of the country’s total area. Nong Khai Province, Mudaharn Province, and Nakorn Phanom Province located here are gateways to neighboring countries.
Central Plain consists of 26 provinces, and features abundant agricultural areas. Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok is located here.

Southern Part consists of two longitudinal sides and 14 provinces. Major provinces like Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi are located on the Andaman Sea side Suraj Thani Province and Songkla Province and located on the Gulf of Thailand side.
Thailand’s capital is the vibrant city of Bangkok and it has a population of approximately 62.38 million people, comprising of Thai nationality and other ethnic groups such as Chinese and Indian. 90% of the population practice Buddhism and the rest 10% practice Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. Thai is the official language of the country. The climate is warm and humid all year with an average temperature of 29 degrees Celsius is summer and 17 degree Celsius in December. In general, there are three seasons including winter (November to February), dry season (March to May) and rain season (June to October)
