Information for the Jewish Community
Hong Kong’s Jewish community is one of the most unique and diverse in the world. Jews have gathered here from many nations since the very early days of Hong Kong’s history. Because of Hong Kong’s historic position as an international trading center, almost every political and religious facet of Judaism is represented.
Jews have played a central role in the life of Hong Kong since its founding as a colony in 1841. These early Jews, who were primarily in commerce, had their origins in the Middle East India, North Africa, Russia, China and Britain. Many have left their distinctive marks on the territory and its institutions.
In more recent times, however, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)’s Jewish population has thrived, becoming the undisputed center of East Asia’s Jewish world. Those involved in the traditional entrepreneurial business such as trading, diamonds and jewellery, property and manufacturing, have been joined by more recent arrivals working in the finance sector, service industry, academia, journalism and for the multinationals. This active and vibrant Jewish community is also a caring one, contributing its time and efforts not only to the improvement of the Jewish community here, but to this thriving HKSAR, including its charities – individually, by congregation and institution, and as a whole. It also contributes to charities and causes in Israel.
